Australian Christian Values Institute political party values checklist

AUSTRALIAN CHRISTIAN VALUES CHECKLIST.

Source: http://www.christianvalues.org.au/check_list.html

One of the aims of the Australian Christian Values Institute is to resource the Christian community in order for individuals to make educated decisions when exercising their democratic right to vote. In the 2006 Census 64% of Australians identified themselves as Christians.

To help the Christian community and those who are sympathetic to Christian values make a more informed choice when it comes to voting, the Australian Christian Values Institute, through its parent body Australian Heart Ministries, has produced Christian values checklists for many elections at both a federal and state level since 1999.

Our goal has been to do a careful bipartisan evaluation of the major parties positions on matters relating to Christian values and present it in a readable, impartial and accurate form to help Australian voters make an informed choice when voting. It might be noted that the political world is inhabited by spin doctors and clever PR gurus. Many times the true goals and voting patterns of the political parties are deliberately obfuscated to avoid polarising the electorate. Generally speaking, it is the goal of the major parties to reveal as little as possible of their specific policy so that votes are not lost before the party in question is elected. That is why much political rhetoric is very general and avoids particular issues, including moral, ethical, social and sexual integrity matters that are of deep concern to bible-believing Christians.

Christianity is based on the bible. Jesus Christ referred to the Old Testament frequently. His mission was to fulfil the law and the prophets.

The teachings of Jesus Christ are held in high regard by Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist writers. The Sermon on the Mount is still used today as the blue-print for successful human relations in the 21st century. For this reason we believe that the Australian Christian Values Checklist is a valuable resource for people of faith and even those who are not Christians because Christian values are the bedrock of Australian society.

Having said that we believe that, it is important for you to do your own research on what you believe the major political parties are really saying on these important matters. One group you can refer to on these issues for your research is the very comprehensive Salt Shakers website www.saltshakers.org.au. Another great resource is the Festival of Light candidate evaluation form at www.fol.org.au. Australian Christian Lobby also has an excellent website www.acl.org.au. We encourage you to attend the Meet the Candidates Forums that are conducted by the Christian Lobby in each individual electorate. It is important to understand the faith/values position of the Candidates in your own electorate.

There are wonderful Christian people in all the political parties and we encourage you to support them whenever you can.

How you vote is up to you. Our job is to do our best to give you accurate information on the various party's positions on Christian Values.

It is then up to you to make your decision after completing your own research taking all this into account then voting according to your own conscience

We hope you find the checklist helpful. Please feel free to pass it on to others as a printed or electronic document. Happy voting!

Natasha Griggs, member for Solomon.

Natasha Griggs.

Updated (slightly) 22 June 2014

The incumbent member for Solomon.i
Natasha Griggs has a background in business and is not in favor of an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) if it would put Northern Territory jobs at risk,ii nor a great big new tax.iii
Natasha Griggs opposed the proposed neuclear waste facility at Muckatay station because the scientist's first choice of a site is in South Australia. She says the Federal Government should use it's constitutional powers to put the waste facility in South Australia.iv
Natasha Griggs has an interest in several properties & says she stands for affordable housing.v
In her maiden speechvi Natasha raised some issues:
  • The lack of affordable housing in the electorate of Solomon.
  • The importance of protecting the environment in the Darwin harbour.
  • Her intention as the member for Solomon to ensure the Northern Territory gets it's fair share of health funding.
  • The issue of indigenous education and the Australian Labor Party promise to “fund remote students at the remote rate regardless of where they attend school”.
  • Giving a hand up (assistance to achieve their best) rather than a hand out to the disabled
As we should expect Natasha Griggs spoke in Parliament many times and on many subjects I have selected a few that indicate her views on moral issues significant to me as a Christian:
  • On 20 October 2010 Mrs Griggs spoke to the: “Inquiry into the Child Protection System in the Northern Territory”. In part she said: I do not care how much money you tell the Northern Territory society you will pay. I want to know how many children’s lives have been bettered and saved. I also call on Australia’s leaders, especially our Indigenous leaders, to step forward because your children, our children, need you. I ask all members of this place to ensure we keep a vigilant watch on how this matter is addressed.”
  • On 13 February she spoke against the commercialisation & sexualisation of children.vii
  • On 14 March 2012 she spoke in favour of the “Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Amendment (R 18+ Computer Games) Bill 2012”. Mrs Griggs said: So, being a good member and representing my electorate, I am actually going to support this bill.” Many Christians including myself believe this allows computer games with more violent and immoral content.viii
  • I include the issue of the “Carbon tax” because I believe it is God who controls the climate, not mankind. On 11 October 2011 Mrs Griggs reminded the house of Julia Gillard's words: “Let us remember it was this Prime Minister who said, 'There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead' ”. Some further points she made include:
“The government's own figures indicate that this tax will immediately put the price of electricity up by 10 per cent, cause a nine per cent increase in gas bills and leave a $4.3 billion hole in the budget.”
Of the target to reduce “greenhouse gas emissions” by 5% by 2020 she said: “This is not through a mechanism of environmental sustainability but by an internationally linked scheme for the purchase of offshore permits.”
The carbon tax will be applied to all aviation through the aviation fuel levy. “This means no matter how big or small your aviation business is, the tax will be applied regardless. Airnorth is not the only aviation company that will be affected, as this will be applied equally to other Territory aviation companies including Hardy Aviation, Chartair and Pearl Aviation, right down to the small operators in private aircraft.”ix
  • On 30 May 2012 Mrs Griggs repeated her reminder of Julia Gillard's pledge not to introduce a carbon tax. She went on:
“Everyone knows that Labor's toxic carbon tax will cascade right through the economy...”.
“Territorians will be slugged more for electricity because Power and Water, our only electricity provider, was included on the carbon tax hit list. It is considered one of Australia's biggest polluters...”
“The government's own figures indicate that thousands of Territorian households will be worse off under the carbon tax.”
“I have spoken in this place many times about petrol and how this carbon tax is a tax on remoteness. Everything in the Northern Territory is freighted in. Do not take my word for it. I have a letter here from Toll, which is putting Territorian customers on notice that freight costs are likely to go up because of the carbon tax.”
“Only a coalition government will deliver to Australians an Australia free of a carbon tax.”x
I hope this is not another politician “speaking with a forked tongue”.
  • On September 17 2012 Mrs Griggs said: “I take my role as Alzheimer's Australia champion very seriously and I will continue to advocate and fight for appropriate funding to tackle this terrible disease which affects not just the elderly in our community...”.xi
  • On 18 September 2012 Mrs Griggs spoke on the: “Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Bill 2012, Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (Consequential and Transitional) Bill 2012”, which affects not for profit organizations including churches and charities. “Some of my colleagues have referred to the comment from David Gonski, a life fellow of the Institute of Company Directors, who said: 'It concerns me massively that we might be the first country in the world to make being on a not-for-profit as a director more onerous than being on a for-profit.' Mission Australia & Carers NT were given as examples of not-for-profits concerned about this bill.
“We do not need this commission, and I concur with my coalition colleagues who have suggested that the money being put into establishing it should be used to support these very important charitable organisations that provide services in our community that are vital to our society. So I cannot support this suite of bills before the House.”xii
Mrs Griggs voted against it but the Bill passed the second reading stage in the lower house.xiii
  • On 31 October 2012 Mrs Griggs spoke about the financial cost of the arrivals of assylum seekers by boat with scant mention of the stated thousand people who died trying. As if these people suffering and dying didn't matter, what she cared about was what could have been done with the money saved if the boats hadn't come.xiv
  • On 18 June 2013 Mrs Griggs spoke against the Charities Bill 2013 expressing concern about the way in which eligibility for charitable status will be decided. It was particularly interesting that “a charity supporting Israel” was raised and that Dr Emmerson took offence to the suggestion that it could be refused the status.xv Mrs Griggs voted against it but the Bill passed the second reading stage.xvi

The Labor candidate for Solomon

Damian Hale.

After the dust had settled on Friday, NT Thunder coach, Damien Hale showed the value of having a coach who knows and accepts the whole Territory, when a development squad played a trial match. … In 2005 one can confidently expect that Hale will recognise talent across the board and create pathways for potentially elite players.”i

He's not very bright when it comes to posing for photos. This picture (right) shows him posing with a Paul's milk crate, it will have on it something like “ALWAYS REMAINS THE PROPERTY OF Q.U.F. INDUSTRIES NOT TO BE USED FOR ANY UNAUTHORISED PURPOSE” (like clearing out your office). It could be argued that this is a picture of him in possession of stolen goods.ii

THE wife of a prominent Territory politician will today make an application for a domestic violence order.

Solomon MHR Damian Hale could not discuss the application because he agreed not to talk to the media.

The application for a domestic violence order against Damian Francis Hale will be made by his ex-wife Jennifer Hale.” iii

Was this a false claim or had Damian Hale been violent towards his now ex wife? If he was violent towards his wife what does it say about his character and his fitness to be the representative of the people of the electorate of Solomon?

“The federal Labor Member for Solomon, Damien Hale, is not backing away from calls for the Federal Government to pay for permits so Northern Territory fishermen can continue to fish off the Tiwi Islands.” What happened to the user pays principle?

There's a lot more to Damian Hale, some of it will be included in additions to this post.

Julia Gillard, former member for Lalor.

Julia
Eileen Gillard.

Updated (slightly) 22 June 2014
Former member for Lalor.
Julia Gillard lacks credibility in both morals and Christianity.i
Julia Gillard was leader of the Labor Party and Prime Minister of Australia for a time. Kevin Rudd tried to regain Labor Party leadership from the time he was deposed as Prime Minister, finally he succeeded.ii
Her register of interests shows details about a spouse but she portrays herself publicly as being single, what else is she hiding.
“Comrade Julia Gillard explains her plan to use Labor as a Trojan horse for the far Left’s agenda:
For the Left to make any real advance all these perspectives on the relationship to Labor in government need to be rejected in favour of a concept of strategic support for Labor governments. We need to recognise the only possibility for major social change is under a long period of Labor administration. Within that administration the Left needs to be willing to participate to shape political outcomes, recognising the need to except (sic) often unpalatable compromises in the short term to bolster the prospect of future advance. The task of pushing back the current political constraints by changing public opinion would need to be tackled by the Left through government, social movements and trade unions.”iii
It’s clear from Gillard’s writings that she sees the Socialist Forum not as a mere “debating society” (another false claim), but as an activist group that would infiltrate Labor to push its own socialist agenda.”iv
“For all who wonder at the term “The Left” ... Ms Gillard has defined it for you. Communists seeking advantage in an increasingly invalid Unionist run Labor Party.” J. Hansfordv
Julia is a member of EMILY's list.
“In Austrlia it functions in the Labor Party.”vi “The acronym "Emily" stands for Early Money Is Like Yeast. First established in the United States, Emily's List is a feminist organisation which raises money to have pro-abortion women elected to parliament.”vii
“Emily's List won't tolerate any restrictions on abortion, even for viable full-term babies.”viii “Just as blacks were once considered property, so now unborn children are considered to be the property of their mothers, to be disposed of as they choose.”ix “To have the financial and political support of Emily's List, a candidate must support the abortion of a full-term baby right up to the moment of birth.”x
“Besides its anti-life activities, Emily's List is committed to affirmative action, meaning discrimination against men in employment and promotion until an equal number of women are employed at all levels. As the pool of available women is always smaller (because of child-bearing and child-raising) than the pool of men, affirmative action involves gross discrimination against men instead of employment and promotion on merit.”xi
I got 421,000 results for that search.
